Watch: Brabham’s BT62 tearing up the track

Written by: Neil

At the start of May, Brabham was reborn with the reveal of the BT62 – a 700bhp mid-engined track car that honours the legacy of the marque’s greatest and most memorable cars.

The car is a stunning example of what is possible when a monster engine (a 5.4-litre V8 in this case) is planted in a car weighing less than a ton (972kg).

Brabham hasn’t confirmed any numbers regarding speed or acceleration so far, but with more than 1,200kg of downforce and 667Nm of torque, we’d imagine the BT62 is an insane drive.

We’ve also now seen footage of the BT62 doing its thing out on the track, completing a lap of Australia’s Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit at incredible speeds during its extensive pre-launch testing programme.

The clip shows the car hit corners at incredible speeds, something that has been made possible thanks to componentry from some of motorsport’s finest, including competition slick tyres from Brabham Automotive’s official tyre supplier and technical partner, Michelin.

Additionally, its chassis has been optimised utilising pushrod-actuated adjustable Öhlins dampers with coilover springs and an adjustable motorsport traction control system.

So much pace is useless if it can’t come to a halt and the BT62’s stopping power comes from bespoke Brembo carbon on carbon brakes for optimal performance, with the unique addition of motorsport ABS.

Brabham managing director and multiple Le Mans winner David Brabham has been the lucky soul putting the car through its paces out in Australia.

He commented: “Our intent was to produce a car which re-established the connection between vehicle and driver, without compromising performance or safety.

“It had to be faster than the current breed of GT racing cars, but balance outright performance with durability. From my very first drive, it was clear that we had created something really special.”

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, added: “It’s always exciting to see a new name join the supercar race and the world is expecting great things from the Brabham BT62.”
