VW Up GTI available to order from February

Written by: Neil

The Volkswagen Up is one of the finest models in the city car segment – it looks and drives great – but fast it ain’t, and that’s where the new VW Up GTI steps in.

Details on the pocket rocket emerged in May 2017, and now VW has announced that it will be accepting orders for the Up GTI from February 4th.

Prices will start from £13,750 or £14,150 if you’d prefer the five-door model; that is surprisingly low considering key rivals such as the Fiat 500 Abarth and Vauxhall Adam S cost upwards of £15,510 and £18,720 respectively.

The car is sure to be notable in its own right but VW will use the Up GTI to pay homage to the original Golf GTI, with dimensions, power and styling all very similar on both cars.

Powered by a single-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine producing 113bhp, the Up GTI can work its way to 62mph in 8.8 seconds, which is marginally quicker than the nine seconds possible in the 108bhp Golf GTI mk1.

The Up GTI stretches for 3600mm with a 1641mm width and 1489mm height, which isn’t too far off the Golf’s measurements (L: 3705mm, W: 1628mm, H: 1390mm).

In terms of weight though, the Up is much heavier, tipping the scales at 997kg, which is 187kg more than the original Golf GTI.

VW has kitted the Up GTI with some swanky styling touches, such as 17-inch Brands Hatch alloy wheels, red front brake callipers, a new front bumper with additional cooling vents, a plastic honeycomb grille insert and a flurry of GTI badges, not to mention the iconic tartan seat coverings.

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “The idea of a souped-up, err, Up feels like an instant win and something that was always destined to happen.

“In its regular form, the Up is a hoot to drive – as are its sister cars the Skoda Citigo and SEAT Mii – and it always felt ripe for the GTI treatment, so we can’t wait to see what it can do.”
