Volvo XC60 named World Car of the Year 2018

Written by: Neil

Petrolheads will fight the corner for their favourite cars until the cows come home, but occasionally, someone offers a definitive answer to the question: ‘What is the best new car?’.

You’ve probably got your own answer but apparently, over the past 12 months, the finest new model to come to market was… the Volvo XC60.

That’s because the new compact SUV has just scooped the title of World Car of the Year at the 2018 World Car Awards (WCA). This comes just weeks after the XC60 was named UK Car of the Year too

A Volvo isn’t the most exciting choice but it’s the car that has stood out to the WCA judging panel, which comprises 82 of the world’s most respected motoring journalists.

The XC60 was included in an initial entry list of 34 vehicles, which was snipped to a shortlist of ten and then three finalists – the other two being the Mazda CX-5 and the Range Rover Velar.

Reacting to the win, Volvo Car’s president Håkan Samuelsson said: “I am pleased to see our company’s product investments paying off.

“We are up against some tough competition, but this award for the XC60 shows that Volvo has the right combination of design, connectivity and safety that appeals to customers across the world.”

Previous winners include the Jaguar F-Pace (2017), Mazda MX-5 (2016), Mercedes-Benz C-Class (2015), Audi A3 (2014), Volkswagen Golf (2013), Volkswagen Up! (2012), Nissan Leaf (2011), Volkswagen Polo (2010), Volkswagen Golf (2009), Mazda2 (2008), Lexus LS460 (2007), BMW 3-Series (2006) and Audi A6 (2005).

Perhaps you noticed that no Range Rover has ever been named World Car of the Year. Unlucky, Velar!

That said, the Velar was deemed to be the most beautifully designed new vehicle on the planet, coming away with the title of World Car Design of the Year. More on that here.

In other World Car Awards categories, BMW’s M5 won World Performance Car, the Audi A8 topped the luxury group, VW’s Polo claimed World Urban Car and the Nissan Leaf was named World Green Car.

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “Volvo has managed to shake its boring brown estate image to be reborn as a swanky SUV company and the results are clearly coming up with the goods.”
