Volvo wins popular vote for UK’s best-looking cars

When considering the best-looking, slickest and most desirable cars on the market, there are a number of names that immediately spring to mind – and "Volvo" might not be one you'd expect to see on that list.

However, the Swedish brand has been quietly knocking out some really fabulous models over the last few years, and it would seem that it's managed to impress British punters enough to top a recent public survey that named Volvo in first place as the maker of the UK's best-looking cars.

More than 1,000 people took part in the survey, which gave participants the chance to vote for their favourite vehicles – or, alternatively, to downvote manufacturers whose designs they didn't fancy as much.

The results saw Volvo end up picking up more votes than the likes of Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz and Audi, while many other famous premium brands missed out on the top ten altogether – further underlining what a coup this result represents for Volvo.

Of course, anyone who's had a look at the Scandinavian giant's recent output won't be surprised by this result. For years, Volvo has been working to declutter its car interiors and improve usability with advances like the Sensus touchscreen and voice-activated control systems, while incorporating natural materials like wood and leather to emphasise an overall aesthetic of craftsmanship and sophistication.

This has led to the company's XC60 mid-size SUV winning the World Car of the Year title, with its XC40 compact SUV named as European Car of the Year. In this context, coming top of the CarBuyer survey is just the icing on the cake.

Jon Wakefield, managing director of Volvo Car UK, said: "People's first impressions about the quality of a car will always be based on how they look, so it is great to see how our new designs are creating such a positive buzz.

"Our design ethos produces striking, beautiful exteriors and elegant, unfussy interiors that are attractive yet eminently practical and easy to live with."
