Volkswagen reveals new T-Roc compact SUV, coming late 2017

Written by: Neil

We love a funky SUV in the Petrol News office and Volkswagen is ticking all the right boxes with the new T-Roc, which has just been revealed ahead of hitting UK roads later this year.

Set to rival the Mazda CX-3, Mini Countryman and Audi Q2 when orders open in October, the new compact SUV is targeted towards a more youthful buyer due to its size and shape, but also its bright and vibrant colour and styling.

Despite this fresh approach, much of what has gone into the T-Roc can be found in existing VW models you’ll find in showrooms right now.

A lot of the T-Roc can be traced back to the Golf. From the MQB platform and the engines and gearbox to the dashboard controls and touchscreen, much of the T-Roc will be very familiar to anyone who has driven anything in the current VW range.

Engine options will be split evenly with three petrols and three diesels. Petrol engines include the entry-level 113bhp single-litre TSI turbo, a 148bhp 1.5-litre TSI Evo with cylinder deactivation and a 197bhp two-litre option.

Diesel drivers can opt for a 113bhp 1.6-litre unit, a 148bhp two-litre block or the range-topping two-litre engine with 197bhp that comes only as an automatic with all-wheel drive.

In terms of design, the T-Roc stays true to the current VW range and some people would swear that VW had shrunk a Tiguan in the wash. The coupe-like rear roofline gives the game away though and inside, the T-Roc’s funkiness comes alive with bright coloured door panels.

Dr Herbert Diess, chairman of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management, believes the T-Roc “sets a new benchmark in the booming SUV segment”.

He added: “With its functionality, dynamic handling and technology, the T-Roc embodies all good Volkswagen qualities. It marks a milestone in our SUV offensive."

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “With the Audi Q2 doing so well, we knew it wouldn’t be long before sister brand VW wanted in on the action and the T-Roc promises to be just as much of a sales hit.”
