Vauxhall reveals new Grandland X, coming early 2018

Written by: Neil

Another week and another new SUV, this time from Vauxhall, who are showing off the Grandland X, which will rival the SEAT Ateca and Volkswagen Tiguan when it goes on sale early 2018.

The Grandland X is the third addition to Vauxhall’s ‘X’ family, following the smaller Mokka X and Crossland X models. Measuring at almost 4.5 metres long and 1.84 metres wide, it’s the biggest SUV to come from Vauxhall since the Antara, which was discontinued in 2015.

Perhaps more interestingly though, it will be the first all-new model from Vauxhall since PSA Peugeot-Citroen bought the brand from General Motors for £1.9 billion earlier this year. As a result of the takeover, the Grandland X will be built on PSA’s EMP2 platform, which underpins the Peugeot 3008 and the new Citroen C5 Aircross we told you about earlier this week.

Despite its French innards, the car looks very much like a Vauxhall, with plenty of design cues from the Astra and the interior bears more than a passing resemblance to the popular hatchback too.

It will be able to comfortably seat five people, while the boot offers 514 litres of load space, or 1.652 litres with the back seats folded down.

There are no details on what will be under the bonnet yet, but rather than pinch engines from the Astra, it is highly likely that the Grandland X will be powered by PSA’s three and four-cylinder petrol and diesel units.

Orders for the Grandland X will be accepted not long after it makes its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, before initial customer deliveries from early 2018.

The Grandland X’s reveal comes days after Audi announced two new SUVs while SsangYong confirmed that it will resurrect the Rexton name for its new SUV.

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, adds: “Exciting times surely lie ahead for Vauxhall. The latest cars to come from Peugeot and Citroen have been well received by critics so the fact that the Grandland X will feature much of their tech suggests the brand is in very safe hands.”
