Vauxhall Corsa GSi ‘warm hatch’ coming later this year

Written by: Neil

Vauxhall doesn’t get much of a look-in around the Petrol News; not because it makes poor cars – Britain’s second best-selling car brand must be doing something right – but rather because the Vauxhall model range doesn’t really do much to elevate the pulse.

Cars like the Corsa, Astra and Insignia will probably always have a market and its expanding range of SUVs and soft-roaders shows the brand is moving with the times.

However, aside from the VXR8, Vauxhall has rarely flexed its performance muscle. But that changed with the resurrection of its warm GSi badge last year with the Insignia GSi.

The 252bhp Insignia GSi may not have set the world on fire, but it showed that Vauxhall was taking performance seriously again, and it’ll introduce another GSi model later this year with the Corsa GSi.

Juicy figures like power output, engine size and acceleration are being kept under wraps for now, but Vauxhall has confirmed that the warmed-up Corsa will borrow sections of the 207bhp Corsa VXR; notably its chassis, along with several design elements.

Vauxhall promises “an agile and purposeful driver’s car but with all the space and efficiency of the regular model”.

Design-wise, it’ll set itself apart from conventional Corsas by sitting on 18-inch alloy wheels, with large air intakes and a honeycomb grille at the front of the car, and deep sill extensions and carbon-trimmed features along the flanks.

At the rear, you’ll find a chrome tailpipe and deep rear spoiler that dishes out extra downforce to pin the back-end at higher speeds.

Inside, there are leather Recaro seats, a leather sports steering wheel and aluminium pedals, as well as Vauxhall’s IntelliLink infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Suspension and brakes are pinched from the current Corsa VXR too, with the firmer springs and competition-tuned dampers offering tight control of the body at high speeds and exceptional levels of grip.

And that’s pretty much all we know for now – check back later this year when we’re sure to have more explicit numbers on the Corsa GSi.
