McLaren claimed a stunning triple crown at the final Pirelli World Championship meet of the season at Laguna Seca last weekend.
Held at the iconic North American circuit, the team secured the 2016 Driver Championship with McLaren Factory driver Alvaro Parente in his debut season, as well as wrapping up the Manufacturer Championship, while customer team K-PAX Racing won the GT Teams Championship.
It was a truly memorable weekend for the British marque, with Parente's 650S GT3 coming home in second, only for race winner Johnny O'Connell to be penalised for what was deemed an 'avoidable incident' on the final lap with Porsche driver Patrick Long – promoting Parente into first place.
Overall, Parente had enough points to take the driver's championship with his original second place, but it was simply the icing on the cake for a team and driver that have set the standard all year.
During the course of what was a memorable season for Parente in his rookie year, he was able to claim six race wins, six pole positions, six fastest laps and a further two P2 finishes.
Everyone here in the Petrol News office was impressed by the dominance of McLaren in this year's championship. We all now look forward to the action resuming next season, when the champions will once again be put to the sternest of tests by a high-calibre field!
