What’s your favourite car to feature in a Hollywood movie? It’s not an easy question to answer because iconic cars regularly steal the show on the silver screen.
However, automotive experts HPI are the latest to try and put the argument to rest by ranking Hollywood’s best ever cars.
And at the top of the heap? The 1964 Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger and Thunderball.
No real shock there, but the positions of some of the entries have the potential to raise some eyebrows, notably the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off coming runner-up.
Another curveball is the 1969 Mustang from 2014’s John Wick, which sneaks in at tenth place.
The rest of the list is typical fare with Smokey and the Bandit’s 1977 Pontiac Trans Am in third, followed by the aquatic 1976 Lotus Esprit Series I from The Spy Who Loved Me and Bullitt’s 1968 Mustang GT 390.
Derren Martin, head of current valuations at HPI, revealed that picking out the most iconic film cars created fierce debate in the company’s offices, but he feels they managed to come up with a list of stunning, scene-stealing cars that all have the wow factor.
“They’re not likely to feature on most people’s shopping lists but these memorable cars in the movies all offer a real sense of escapism,” he said.
Mr Martin reckons 007’s DB5 is a constant favourite due to its amazing array of cool tricks and outlandish gadgets including smoke screen, machine guns, ejector seat and oil-slick sprayer.
Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, adds: “The DB5 also featured a visionary dashboard-mounted navigation screen that went on to become commonplace many decades later. It’s scarily accurate.”
