The Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 is a supercar in disguise

Written by: Neil

Whenever the words ‘Mercedes’ and ‘AMG’ come together, you can count on more than a few murmurs of excitement about the Petrol News office.

This time, the area of focus is on the GLC 63 SUV, which has just been slapped with an official price tag of £68,920, ahead of its arrival early next year.

A sleek-backed coupe bodystyle will also be available for slightly more, starting from £71,410, while an even-more powerful S version of both bodyshapes is available for £78,160.

But why should we care about the performance-honed GLC? Because it can race from stony silence to 62mph in just four seconds, that’s why.

If that wasn’t enough, S variants can do it a fifth of a second quicker (3.8s).

Top speed for all GLC 63s is electronically capped at 155mph, but this can be increased to 167mph or even 174mph in the S.

All GLCs come powered by a handbuilt four-litre biturbo V8 petrol engine, mated to an AMG Speedshift MCT nine-speed sports transmissions as standard, with a power output of 460bhp, raising to 503bhp for the S.

Standard specification includes AMG high-performance braking system, AMG sports suspension, AMG mechanical rear axle differential lock, Comand Online infotainment system, AMG sports seats with nappa leather upholstery, ambient lighting, memory package (including electrically operated front seats, steering wheel and exterior mirrors) and 19-inch AMG 10-spoke alloy wheels in titanium grey.

The limited production Edition 1, priced from £90,824, comes with selenite grey magno paint, with decals in yellow, ceramic brakes, AMG performance exhaust, 21-inch AMG cross-spoked alloys in black with yellow rims, a Burmester surround sound system, AMG performance seats with diamond design and yellow contrast stitching, AMG night package and keyless-go comfort package.

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “There’s no shortage of new SUVs about these days, but the GLC 63 is truly something special. With a 0-62mph sprint of under four seconds, most supercars would struggle to keep up with this fancy SUV.”
