SsangYong targets cost-conscious SUV buyers with new Rexton

Written by: Neil

Korean carmaker SsangYong has revealed the fourth-generation Rexton, due to go on sale in the UK by the end of the year.

The all-new model will make its world debut at the forthcoming Seoul Motor Show, ahead of launching in its native Korea in the first half of 2017, where it will be known as G4 Rexton. Why the different name? We’re not entirely sure, but whatever.

Bosses at SsangYong say the new large SUV will ‘deliver style, a great driving experience, high levels of safety and new technology’ with a refined interior, 3D around view monitoring and a wide 9.2-inch HD screen that includes a fancy smartphone-mimicking system.

The new Rexton could possibly prove to be a worthy alternative to Hyundai’s Santa Fe, Toyota’s Land Cruiser and the Land Rover Discovery. At 4.85 metres long, 1.92 metres wide and 1.8 metres high, it is bigger than its supposed Hyundai rival and with prices set to start from under £30,000, it would easily undercut the £32,230 Santa Fe.

Engine options will include a new 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo petrol, both with rear- or all-wheel drive.

SsangYong doesn’t really get much coverage on Petrol News because in the past, there’s never been much call for it, so you may be wondering why we’re bothering to tell you about its new car now.

The truth is, the brand is slowly but surely shaking off its dated reputation for peddling models made up of decade-old Mercedes tech, and is emerging as a budget brand to be reckoned with following the success of the Juke-sized Tivoli.

SsangYong’s Turismo Tourist towed away the Micro Motorhome award in the Caravan and Motorhome Club Motorhome Design Awards in mid-March and the brand’s UK-based dealership network has now grown to 60 locations. Best get used to seeing more Korean SUVs out on the roads…

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, adds: “It seems like you can’t take a breath without a new SUV popping up somewhere, but the new Rexton warrants its existence by offering plenty of bang for not very much buck. Who can argue with that?”
