Skoda’s 237bhp Kodiaq vRS finally breaks cover in Paris

Written by: Neil

Skoda has finally revealed its new performance SUV at the Paris Motor Show.

The Kodiaq vRS has been teased by the Czech car maker for months with official details dripping through at an agonising rate.

But at last here we are with the third Skoda model ever to wear the vRS badge, following the Octavia and much-missed Fabia variant.

Unlike the petrol-fueled Octavia vRS, the Kodiaq vRS opts for diesel to power its two-litre bi-turbo unit. It’s pretty much the same engine you’ll find in the Volkswagen Tiguan, producing 237bhp and 500Nm of torque, which is sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed DSG gearbox.

All of this means that it can get to 62mph in exactly seven seconds, before going on to a top speed of 137mph – impressive for a car this chunky.

It’s not just the engine that’s been beefed up during the vRS treatment either; the chassis has been tweaked to handle the fiercer performance.

Meanwhile, the driver can choose between six self explanatory settings: eco, comfort, normal, sport, individual and snow. Each mode varies the rate of the adaptive dampers to suit the road conditions, while a progressive steering system adjusts the speed of the rack, allowing for a weighted, precise response at higher speeds or a lighter, quicker feel to make low speed driving easier.

In a first for a Skoda, a sound boost system has been introduced, amplifying the engine’s exhaust note to add a more exciting soundtrack to the whole experience.

The Kodiaq vRS recently set a new lap record for a seven-seat SUV at the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit, with Sabine Schmitz guiding it around the tough track in nine minutes, 29.84 seconds. If you’ve no need for seven seats, the car is also available as a five-seater.

Prices haven’t been confirmed for the Kodiaq vRS yet, but something in the region of £40,000 seems likely.

Jess Wort, marketing manager at Petrol News, comments: “Performance SUVs have been big news of late, what with the arrival of the Jaguar F-Pace and Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio – but Skoda has something unique on its hands with the Kodiaq vRS.”
