Skoda used to be a name that would spark sniggers and many a lol amongst petrolheads, but now, they’re a force to be reckoned with, backed by the latest tech and engines from across the VW Group.
The Czech brand has impressed with its current SUVs – the Yeti-replacing Karoq and Tiguan-rivaling Kodiaq, which has just been revealed in scorching vRS mode – and we can expect another model of this ilk to emerge over the next 12 months.
Set to be unveiled before the end of the year, the Skoda Scala will sit below the Karoq as a ‘baby crossover’ to rival the Nissan Juke.
Bernhard Maier, chairman of the board of Skoda Auto, believes the Scala will signal a new chapter in compact Skodas.
“It is a completely new development that sets standards in terms of technology, safety and design in this class,” he commented.
“Thus we are confident that Scala has the best chance to redefine the A-segment for Skoda.”
Scala translates to ‘stair’ in Italian, so it was kinda disappointing that Mr Maier’s comment didn’t seize this opportunity for a shameless pun.
Anyway, the Scala will be the first European Skoda model to bear the brand lettering across the centre of the boot lid; a stylistic shift seen recently with the new Ford Focus.
The brand says the car marks the ‘next big step (there it is!) forward in design and technology’, debuting a new exterior and interior design language.
Jess Wort, marketing manager at Petrol News, comments: “Skoda has earned a reputation for solid and dependable cars over the past decade and now it is really spreading its wings and showing what it can do.”
