Skoda may have just revealed all on its high performance Kodiaq vRS – only the third model ever to wear the vRS badge – but the Czech brand has wasted no time in showing off another take on the popular SUV.
Developed exclusively for China, the Kodiaq GT is Skoda’s first coupé SUV, combining the robustness and versatility of an SUV with the sporty elegance and dynamism of a coupé.
Skoda hopes the car will win over new, lifestyle-oriented consumers when it is officially unveiled in China at the Guangzhou Motor Show on November 16th.
So, what’s it like?
Size-wise, it’s a tad shorter in length than the standard Kodiaq, stretching for 4.63 metres rather than 4.69 metres.
The car’s silhouette is naturally more dynamic with the gently sloping roofline behind the front doors merging into the flat tailgate. There are some nifty styling tweaks too, with a black-framed grille and chrome-plated dual ribs. Its powerful appearance is reinforced thanks to the LED headlights, three-dimensional bumper and front spoiler with wide air inlets. Powerful wheel arches and chiselled side skirts in the body colour with matte black elements also add to the large SUV’s robust feel.
Inside, you’ll find high-quality materials and the fully customisable Virtual Cockpit, as well as the usual array of practical ‘Simply Clever’ ideas. With Wi-Fi access and MirrorLink, the Kodiaq GT is always online and at the cutting edge of connectivity.
Under the bonnet is a pair of efficient two-litre petrol engines: one with 183bhp and front-wheel-drive and another with 216bhp and all-wheel drive, mated to a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox.
The Chinese market is massive to Skoda. In 2017, one in every four Skodas delivered worldwide ended up in China.
Dr. Ralf Hanschen, president of Skoda China, said the Kodiaq GT represents “an important milestone in the brand’s Chinese strategy.
“We are confident that this sporty and stylish Skoda model will appeal to new customer groups and provide an even more impressive driving experience for our customers in China,” he commented.
Jess Wort, marketing manager at Petrol News, comments: “While us Brits only get two Skoda SUVs – the Karoq and Kodiaq – the Chinese get not only this GT Kodiaq but also the Kamiq, which sits below the Karoq.”
