Rewind to November and you may recall us telling you about a very special SEAT Leon that was in the pipeline.
The Leon Cupra R ticked all the boxes for us in the Petrol News office, even if it was a bummer that only 799 examples would ever be produced. Our glowing grins soured even more when it became apparent that only 24 would reach British roads.
Now, our hopes of driving one seem all but lost after Seat confirmed that the UK allocation of Cupra R models has sold out.
SEAT UK director Richard Harrison said he was delighted that the UK-bound cars found homes in such a short space of time.
“As soon as we saw the Leon Cupra R for the first time, we knew it would appeal strongly to British performance car enthusiasts, but we’ve simply been blown away by the amount of interest,” he commented.
“I’m sure their lucky owners will enjoy many years of great driving in this exclusive series.”
What’s so special about the Cupra R though?
Well, by exploiting its front-wheel-drive two-litre 305bhp TSI petrol engine, the Leon Cupra R can clear a 0-62mph sprint in 5.8 seconds.
Priced at just under £35k, the hearty hatch backs up this thrilling pace with some sporty modifications, such as a new steering system, modified camber angles on the front axle and four piston Brembo brake callipers, while a retuned exhaust system unlocks an even racier note.
Stylistically, the Cupra R sets itself apart with carbon fibre details on the rear spoiler, lower lip spoiler, side skirts and rear diffuser, as well as copper and black 19-inch Cupra R alloy wheels. As such, the Cupra R has been widely regarded as the ultimate Seat Leon.
Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “There should never have been any doubt that the Cupra R would sell out, at least in the UK. We Brits love a hot hatch and this is a beaut.”
