SEAT’s second SUV and flagship model coming 2018

Written by: Neil

2016 was the year of the ‘first ever SUV’.

From Skoda and SEAT to Jaguar and Bentley, any mainstream car manufacturers that hadn’t joined the SUV party already jumped in with both feet.

The refreshing thing was, all of them were great cars in their own right and worthy additions to the increasingly crowded SUV marketplace.

Now, SEAT – fresh from launching the Qashqai-rivalling Ateca – has announced a second, larger SUV, due to reach UK dealerships some time in 2018.

The name of the SUV is being kept under wraps for now but SEAT has confirmed that the car will act as a big brother to the Ateca and serve as the Spanish brand’s flagship model – something it has been missing since, well, ever!

It will be offered with five or seven seats and will be designed and developed in Barcelona with actual production being handled by the VW Group’s Wolfsburg factory.

Aside from that, any other details are guesswork.

You’d expect – with the car’s fast-approaching introduction – that it would be built on the much-used MQB platform, which also underpins a raft of VW Group models including the SEAT Ateca and Leon, VW Golf, Tiguan and Passat, Audi A3 and Q3, Skoda Octavia and Kodiaq; oh jeez, the list goes on!

Similarly, it’ll most likely make use of VW’s punchy 2.0-litre TDI and TSI engines, while the interior layout probably won’t be worlds away from what you see right now in the Ateca.

In fact, if you can imagine an Ateca that was just blown up a little and given a more rugged off-road look, then that’s what you could most likely see in SEAT showrooms come the end of 2018.

Call us cynical, but we’ve seen this ‘Russian doll’ approach from the VW Group before with Audi’s line of Q SUVs. There’s nothing wrong with it, the method clearly works because Audi’s sales are through the roof, just don’t expect anything revolutionary when you eventually see SEAT’s new SUV.

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, adds: “It looks like SEAT is keen to capitalise on the success of the Ateca and who could blame them? It’s a great car and the promise of more SUV-shaped SEATs can only be a positive thing.”
