The SEAT Leon Cupra was so great that it forced many of us in the Petrol News office to view the Spanish brand as a serious manufacturer of hot hatches after it was out of the game for so long.
So you can imagine the waves of grinning faces that greeted the news that SEAT will offer its most powerful model yet, based on the Leon Cupra.
The front-wheel drive Leon Cupra R will come linked to a six-speed manual gearbox and feature a new steering system, modified camber angles on the front axle, four piston Brembo brake callipers and crucially, a retuned exhaust system with even racier note.
What does this mean for performance? A 0-62mph sprint of 5.8 seconds and a top speed limited to 155mph, with a two-litre 305bhp TSI petrol engine.
Although production for the Leon Cupra R will be capped at 799 units, only 24 will reach the UK.
The Leon Cupra R will set itself apart from any other Leon on the road with a monsoon grey or midnight black exterior and carbon fibre details on the rear spoiler, lower lip spoiler, side skirts and rear diffuser, while the newly extended wheel arches get a more powerful design around the air intakes.
Elsewhere, copper colouring pops up on the door mirrors, tailgate lettering and 19-inch Cupra R alloy wheels, as well as in the cabin on the dashboard, centre console, door panel stitching and steering wheel Cupra logo.
Prices start at £34,995 on the road, with deliveries beginning in January 2018.
Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “The Leon is a great hatch in its most basic form, taking its basis from the class-leading VW Golf. But this looks like the ultimate Leon and we envy any Brit who gets to own one.”
