Nico Rosberg opened this year's Formula 1 calendar with a bang on Sunday (March 20th), as the Mercedes ace romped home to victory in the first race of the new season.
It was an eventful day on track for the 22 drivers that make up this season's field of Formula 1 racing titans, with the excitement of the return of the pinnacle of motorsport palpable throughout the race weekend.
The thrills of Mercedes powering to a deserved one-two finish were a proper reflection of the performance of the teams during what was a hard-fought encounter.
However, it was not just the leading pack that created drama in Melbourne, as one of the most heart-stopping crashes of recent memory was seen when the McLaren of Fernando Alonso ran into the rear tyre of Esteban Gutierrez's Haas and flipped into the tyre barriers at turn three.
Thankfully, both drivers walked away from the accident, slightly shaken but otherwise unhurt.
Indeed, the day could have been so different, had Ferrari ensured the appropriate tyres were fitted to Sebastian Vettel's car when the race restarted after a 20-minute hiatus to clear the track of debris.
Fitting super soft tyres, Ferrari gambled that Vettel could build a lead over his rivals as he restarted in first place, but he fell back behind both Mercedes when making a pitstop to replace his aged tyres after both his rivals opted for the more durable medium tyre.
Here in the Petrol News office we're ecstatic to have one of our favourite forms of motoring entertainment back for another year, and with the rivalry of Mercedes and Ferrari already hotting up, we're hoping for great things when the F1 circus rolls back into town in Bahrain on April 3rd.
