Revealed: the most popular cars with Premier League footballers

Written by: Neil

If you want to drive around pretending to be a Premier League footballer, get a Range Rover Evoque.

At least that’s the advice after research revealed the compact SUV to be the most popular car amongst top-flight footballers.

Costing upwards of £30,000, the Evoque seems a modest choice considering the salary of a Premier League player averages just short of £2.5 million.

We expected the top ten list to be littered with super cars and hulking SUVs and we weren’t wrong.

The research, published by premium vehicle finance experts JBR Capital, named the extravagant Lamborghini Aventador as the second most popular model with Premier League footballers, followed by the Mercedes-Benz Onyx G6 GLE Coupe and Bentley Continental GT.

In fourth and fifth place, we had more OTT supercars – the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and Lamborghini Huracan respectively.

More mud-plugging SUVs were found in seventh and ninth with the Jeep Wrangler Kahn Sahara and Bentley Bentayga, with the list completed by the timeless Porsche 911 GTS in eighth and McLaren 675LT Spider in tenth.

Perhaps the most eyebrow-raising fact is not the cars themselves, but that people on more than £2 million a year buy their cars on finance.

“The highest-earning Premiership players can bring in six-figure salaries each week and could buy many of the cars on this list easily without finance, but like regular motorists, it pays to be smart and they are increasingly savvy in their financial affairs,” said Darren Selig, chief executive and co-founder of JBR Capital, which specialises in providing finance for supercars, classic, prestige, historic and racing cars.

He went on to explain that footballers like to limit the loan’s monthly payment to maintain financial flexibility, allowing them to set aside large sums for investments such as property.

“They do not want to overextend their budget with outright purchases,” Mr Selig added. “They also generally run finance deals from two to four years, as these allow them the most flexibility.”

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “People often poke fun at footballers for being a bit dense and while some of them may not be academically minded, they’re clearly very savvy when it comes to money.”
