There’s a new Renault SUV – hurray! But it’s not coming to the UK – boooo!
Yeah, the reveal of the new Arkana would’ve triggered mixed feelings from UK-based fans of high-riding Renaults.
Unveiled at the Moscow Motor Show, this coupe-crossover combines the elegance of a saloon and the sturdiness of an SUV, but there are no plans to bring it to Europe any time soon.
The Arkana will launch in Russia next year with other markets set to follow, however, it seems unlikely that British motorists will ever get to drive it.
‘A French touch’
Renault describes the Arkana’s design as “class-unique” and “a real novelty in the very competitive C-segment”.
This robust SUV boasts an elevated ground clearance, wide wheel arches and large 19-inch wheels for tackling tricky terrain, while the high waistline and sloping coupe roofline is emphasised by side chrome detailing and a panoramic glass roof.
Laurens Van den Acker, senior vice-president of corporate design at Groupe Renault, described the Arkana show car as a distinctive coupe-crossover that dials in “specific Renault cues with a strong design, strength and sensuality with a French touch”.
It may come as a surprise to you that Groupe Renault is massive in Russia. In 2017, it claimed over a quarter (28 per cent) of the Russian market, with 448,270 Renault and Dacia models sold.
As a result, Russia is currently Groupe Renault’s number two market and it could become its leading market by 2022.
Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “Renault has a history of withholding models from the UK market and the brand is clearly still very cautious after axing half of its UK range during the most recent recession.
“The Arkana would certainly appeal to a lot of Brits though so hopefully they reconsider.”
