Fans of Formula 1 will be pleased to learn that automotive giant Renault is set to return to the paddock for the 2016 championship season.
Taking over from the now defunct Lotus team, Renault will be making a triumphant return to F1 after leaving the sport back in 2012.
With more than 40 years of history in the top flight of racing and 12 championship titles, Renault is one of the biggest names in global car design and it is therefore an extremely positive development to see the team preparing for a new season of on-track action at the pinnacle of motorsport.
Carlos Ghosn, chairman and chief executive officer at Renault, stated: “Renault had two options: to come back at 100 per cent or leave. After a detailed study, I have decided that Renault will be in Formula 1, starting 2016.
“The final details supplied by F1’s main stakeholders gave us the confidence to accept this new challenge. Our ambition is to win – even if it will take some time.”
Full details of the new team’s setup are unlikely to be released until the new year, but it is with growing anticipation that the company will now build upon its position as a Formula 1 engine provider over the coming years.
The change in ownership of the Lotus team is also not expected to alter the planned driver line-up for Renault in 2016, with Pastor Maldonado and rookie Jolyon Palmer predicted to maintain their position as first choice drivers.
