Records broken at this year’s Silverstone Classic

Written by: Neil

It was another stunning weekend of high-octane fun at this year's Silverstone Classic and, here in the Petrol News office, we can easily say it's one of our favourite events on the automotive calendar.

The nostalgic aspect of watching some of the fastest and most impressive cars of yesteryear make their way around the challenging Silverstone circuit was a real draw for the crowds this year, and as a result, a series of records have tumbled in 2016.

With more than 100,000 attendees this year, Silverstone Classic 2016 was the largest to date and the atmosphere was, unsurprisingly, electric.

A total of 20 races (the largest number ever) took place this year and a 200-plus vehicle cavalcade of Porsche models to mark the 40th anniversary of the company's first 'transaxle' model in 1976 was another stupendous sight to behold.

Other highlights from the festival dedicated to classic racers included the track time of six classic Grand Prix cars from the 80s (from the height of the V8/V12 era) and Sunday afternoon's FIA Masters Historic Sports Car race – featuring iconic models like the Matra MS650 and Lola T70s.

Overall, it was such a great event that we're already looking forward to next year and here's hoping 2017 will go on to break even more records!
