Polestar 1 set to light up Goodwood this July

Written by: Neil

Warmer weather means only one thing: the Goodwood Festival of Speed is coming.

Between July 12-15th, thousands of the world’s most outrageous cars will tear up the grounds of Goodwood House in West Sussex for what is effectively Glastonbury for petrolheads.

One of them, we’ve just found out, will be the Polestar 1 – the first car from Volvo’s performance division since going solo as a standalone brand last year.

Those heading to the show will see prototype #004 of the two-door electric performance hybrid blast up the famous hill climb, with Polestar chief test driver Joakim Rydholm at the helm.

Mr Rydholm said he was excited by the prospect of driving the prototype at such an iconic motoring event.

“Driving the hill climb has been a long-time ambition for me, and to be able to do it in the same prototype in which we’ve spent so many months of development time, is truly special,” he commented.

It’ll be a rare chance for the public to get a closer look at the car’s design and performance as it continues its real-world performance, chassis and suspension-testing programme.

Rather than squeeze an electric motor into a petrol or diesel car, the Polestar 1 has been developed the other way round, serving as an electric car first but being supported by an internal combustion engine.

As a result, it has a pure electric range of 93 miles – the longest full electric range of any hybrid car on the market.

However, with a petrol engine producing a power output of 591bhp and maximum torque of 1,000Nm, it’ll be quite a rocket too and more than justifies its place at Goodwood.

Polestar chief executive officer Thomas Ingenlath said the response to the Polestar 1 from the UK has been “fantastic”.

“We see this event as a vital part of our continued ‘global handshake’ with enthusiasts and our customers around the world,” he went on to say.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to meet so many people who share our passion for Polestar and the future of the brand.”

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “The Polestar 1 exploits advances in electric motors to deliver truly stunning performance. We can’t wait to see it at Goodwood.”
