Peugeot 3008 lucks out in Irish Car of the Year

Written by: Neil

Peugeot’s 3008 has been named Irish Car of the Year by motoring journalists ahead of the BMW 5 Series and Honda Civic.

The 3008 was recently reimagined from a frumpy, undesirable MPV to a sharp and stylish SUV with seemingly just the nameplate being the only thing that remains unchanged.

This radical rebirth has impressed critics around the world, especially so Ireland, it seems.

2017’s Irish Car of the Year awards were made up of eight categories with the winner of each being considered for the top title.

Peugeot’s 3008 triumphed in the Irish compact crossover of the year group before claiming the overall prize, but other winners were the Kia Picanto (Irish city car of the year), Nissan Micra (small car), Honda Civic (compact car) and the Alfa Romeo Giulia (medium car).

The winners list was completed by the Skoda Kodiaq (large crossover), Toyota Prius PHEV (green/efficient car) and finally the Alfa Romeo Giulia again, this time in Quadrifoglio form for the performance/sports car category.

Reacting to the Giulia’s double, managing director of FCA Ireland Paul Hunt said: “For the entire Giulia range to be lauded at the most prestigious awards in the Irish calendar is really humbling.

“The Irish Car of the Year jury have recognised the passion and dedication that has been gone into making the Giulia and has made it into a car that can be chosen with both the head and the heart.”

Speaking about the overall winner though, Irish Car of the Year committee member Michael Sheridan said: “What an achievement for the Peugeot 3008 to come out on top from a field of some 60 new models launched this year on the Irish market.”

Fellow committee member David Walshe added: “It was a very tight competition this year with many, many fine vehicles in the running for the Irish Car of the Year accolade, congratulations to a worthy winner.”

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “A bewildering number of fresh models reach the new car market in Ireland every year so these awards are hugely helpful in guiding Irish motorists towards the best vehicles out there.”
