New Mercedes-Benz GLE priced and specced, coming spring 2019

Written by: Neil

Mercedes’ new GLE will be available from under £56,000 when it hits UK roads in spring 2019.

The diesel-fuelled GLE 300 d 4MATIC carries a price tag of £55,685 on the road, while the petrol-powered GLE 450 4MATIC rings in at £62,300.

Under the bonnet of the diesel version is a two-litre four-cylinder unit, producing 241bhp and 500Nm of torque. This is enough to get the car up to 62mph from a halt in 7.2 seconds with a top speed of 140 mph. On a combined cycle, it can return up to 46.3mpg, emitting 162g/km of CO2 on 20-inch wheels.

The petrol option – GLE 450 4MATIC – uses a three-litre six-cylinder engine, churning out 362bhp and 500Nm of torque. This variant comes with the hybrid-esque EQ Boost – a 48-volt onboard network with a belt-driven starter/alternator that adds 21bhp to the car’s overall output.

This results in a more spritely performance, sprinting from zero to 62 mph in 5.7 seconds before topping out at 155mph. Fuel economy dips to 33.6mpg at 191g/km CO2.

The amount of equipment lumped in with the GLE as standard is quite generous. Every new GLE comes with a 12.3-inch widescreen cockpit display and a 12.3-inch touchscreen media display, loaded with Merc’s MBUX multimedia system, including ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice activation (think ‘Hello Google’).

Also included is blind spot assist, 20-inch five-twin-spoke AMG alloy wheels, illuminated grab handles and running boards, static LEDs with active high beam assist, privacy glass, anthracite open-pore oak wood trim with Nappa leather upholstery, automatically dimming driver’s exterior mirror and rear-view mirror, heated front seats, active parking assist, automatic two-zone climate control, and traffic sign assist.

Buyers can add various packages to their GLE too. For £1,995, the ‘Premium’ package throws in multibeam LEDs with adaptive high beam assist plus, memory package, wireless charging and a 360-degree camera.

The £495 ‘Tech’ package includes augmented navigation and smartphone integration, while the £1,495 ‘Tech Plus’ package adds head-up display and MBUX Interior Assistant, which allows intuitive, natural operation of different comfort and MBUX functions by movement recognition.

Jess Wort, marketing manager at Petrol News, comments: “The GLE is one of the most luxurious and desirable compact SUVs out there and this new version only embellishes that fact.”
