BMW has revealed all on its new sixth-generation M5, due to go on sale in February 2018.
The supremely souped-up 5 Series comes powered by an enhanced 4.4-litre V8 engine with the M xDrive all-wheel drive system, exclusive to BMW’s M cars.
It may not look like much from the image above which makes the M5 one of the most deceptive sleeper cars on the market. That’s because it is capable of producing 591bhp and up to 750 Nm of torque (70Nm more than the old M5) from just 1,800rpm through to 5,600 rpm.
All that power is transferred through a new eight-speed M Steptronic automatic gearbox to launch the car to 62mph in 3.4 seconds. This makes it the fastest M5 yet.
Speed is electronically capped at 155mph, but it can cover most of that at an alarming rate, hit 124mph in just 11.1 seconds. Some saloons struggle to reach half that speed in that amount of time.
Fuel economy is rarely a concern with high performance saloons, but in the interest of being thorough, provisional figures see a combined fuel consumption of 26.9mpg and CO2 emissions of 241g/km.
Like many new cars these days, the M5’s engine can be switched to different settings like ‘comfort’, ‘sport’ or ‘sport plus’ to suit its environment. The latter two provide a swifter turbo response.
BMW’s M engineers have developed new turbochargers and a higher injection pressure of up to 350bar. The result is shorter injection times and better fuel atomisation, making it both faster and more efficient.
Stylistically, the M5 sets itself apart from the regular 5 Series with a completely redesigned front bumper with enlarged air openings to supply the cooling systems and brakes with sufficient cooling, even in on the race track.
Elsewhere, the track width is greater than the car’s predecessor, while the front wings are aluminium for weight reduction and carry characteristic M-sport cooling gills.
A brand new exterior shade – marina bay blue metallic – has been introduced for the new M5, but buyers can also choose from matt colours such as frozen dark silver or frozen arctic grey.
Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “The M5 is about as iconic as its M3 sibling and this new model promises to continue delivering its unique blend of luxury, performance and comfort.”
