How much fun can you get with a 3-pin plug? Well, quite a lot if it’s attached to a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. The new, second generation model is now available from £34,255 OTR. The attraction for this hybrid will be the savings: up to £10,000 in company car tax; plus, with just 41g/km CO2, and an EV range of 28miles, the Outlander PHEV is at the lowest possible 13% BIK. Just think about the thousands you will save – what fun!
It’s pleasantly silent to drive on urban roads, providing 20 miles on a single charge – enough for the daily commute. Plus, to mitigate the weight of having two batteries front and back, drivers can get more grip on country roads via the Super All-Wheel Control system. The steering ratio has also been revised and the power steering ECU re-mapped offers more responsiveness and feel, while larger front brake discs boosts stopping power. There’s also a new Snow mode to improve low-grip launching and cornering abilities on slippery surfaces. On top of that, the front and rear shock absorbers have been revised and the suspension has been tweaked to add more comfort.
A new 2.4-litre petrol engine produces 135ps (up from 121ps) with greater torque (211Nm vs 190Nm). The rear electric motor output increases to 95ps and the drive battery benefits from a 10% increase in output, the overall capacity is increased to 13.8kWh, all of this results in a combined fuel economy of 139mpg at high speeds. And, if you need to recharge en route, using a 3-pin socket, this hybrid can rapid charge to 80% in 25 minutes.
Keeping a tab on your charge, is a mobile phone app, which will send friendly reminders. Drivers can also climate control their car, so it’s the perfect temperature before driving off. When it comes to updating, forget that annoying ‘ping’ if a seatbelt is not being worn, on this vehicle, the electric parking will not disengage, unless it’s passengers are engaged.
In terms of space, there are plenty of cubby holes and door holders for items, the boot is not as large compared to the petrol version of this model, but that’s because of the battery taking up the floor space, but you can still fit a decent amount of luggage. There is enough room in the back seat for three adults, and the chairs configure back for added comfort. The interior and exterior have had a few updates, and extras you can add on, but seriously, none of these mentioned aesthetics are the main motivation for most drivers looking for fun in an electric SUV.
