McLaren’s super-limited 1,035bhp Speedtail can hit 186mph in 12.8 seconds

The world has waited a long time for the follow-up to McLaren’s F1 supercar from the ‘90s, and it’s finally here, in the shape of the McLaren Speedtail.

Billed as a ‘hyper-GT’, the car designed to rival big guns like the Bugatti Chiron packs more road presence than almost anything we’re ever seen on four wheels.

Stretching for 5.2 metres, the Speedtail is the same length as a long-wheelbase Mercedes S-Class limousine. Visually, there are a few design cues you’ll have seen in existing McLaren, but they’ve been cranked-up, notably the ultra-slim front headlights and the slats at either side of the front bumper that allow fast-moving air to pass along the car’s flanks.

Providing the performance is a pioneering petrol-electric hybrid powertrain that can create 1,035bhp, getting the car up to 186mph from a standstill in 12.8 seconds with a top speed that exceeds the 243mph record peak speed of the legendary McLaren F1.

That’s downright outrageous and makes it the fastest McLaren ever built.

The Speedtail is a three-seater, with the driver positioned in the middle, flanked by the two rear passengers.

Sadly, only 106 Speedtails will ever be produced and they’ve already been spoken for at a cost of £1.75 million each.

Mike Flewitt, chief executive at McLaren Automotive, said the Speedtail is like no other vehicle built by McLaren, hailing it to be the “ultimate McLaren road car”.

“It’s a fusion of art and science that combines an astonishing maximum speed with an iconic central-driving position and a truly pioneering approach to bespoke personalisation,” he commented.

“A ground-breaking hybrid powertrain sits within a lightweight carbon fibre body reminiscent of sleek ‘streamliners’ that once set world speed records, while the luxurious three-seat cockpit offers a sublime combination of an incredible driving experience, unmatched individualism and innovative materials never seen before in a road-going vehicle.”

Jess Wort, marketing manager at Petrol News, comments: “We’ve grown used to McLaren serving up extraordinary automobiles, but the Speedtail goes one further yet again.”
