McLaren is a brand that always grabs the attention of the Petrol News office without fail but the Surrey-based sportscar manufacturer has really surpassed itself this time, with the announcement of its most extreme road car ever.
The hypercar, which goes by the P15 codename for now, will be faster than every McLaren before it, bar the track-only P1 GTR.
Powering this beast will be a version of McLaren’s 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 that has been tweaked to produce around 789bhp, a power output that outdoes the 727bhp found in the road-going P1.
Weighing just 1,300kg, it will be astonishingly light and achieving an even better power-to-weight ratio than the P1 hybrid.
Performance figures are still sketchy but McLaren is confident the P15 will match, if not better, the P1’s 2.7-second 0-60mph sprint.
It’s worth stressing that this isn’t some track-only plaything; the P15 will be completely road legal. You could literally go down to the shops in it, although we’re not sure where you’d pack all the bags for the return leg.
You’d have to find £840,000 too and even though you’re not guaranteed one with production capped at 500 units.
That image at the top is the only shot of the P15 so far but styling has been described as ‘brutal’ with active aerodynamics, self-adjusting spoilers and a huge diffuser.
The finished P15, which will represent the second model in McLaren’s Ultimate Series after the P1, is set to make its debut in front of existing and potential McLaren customers later this year, before seeing a wider unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2018.
Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “We expect to be impressed when the conversation turns to McLaren, but the P15 promises to be something really special and surpass all expectations. We can’t wait to see it in the flesh.”
