McLaren 720S races off with major design award

Written by: Neil

McLaren has been on such an impressive roll of success that we’re kind of getting sick of talking about how awesome they are.

However, we have to tell you about this latest achievement because the 720S has just added a major design award to its trophy cabinet.

The all-conquering supercar has just come out top in the Best of the Best category at the 2018 Red Dot Design Awards.

This marks the second time a new McLaren has been awarded this international seal of outstanding design quality, after the 570S Coupé did the same in 2016.

Criteria for the competition – one of the world’s largest design contests – take into account five qualities: innovation, functionality, formal quality, ergonomics and durability.

Of the 6,300 products from 59 countries up for the ultimate Red Dot title in 2018, just one per cent were considered worthy of the Best of the Best title.

As such, the brand’s design director Rob Melville said the award was “a great honour”.

“McLaren is always brave in its approach and the 720S is the perfect expression of that innovative culture,” he commented.

“The number of various design, product and engineering awards received by the car is a real testament to the quality of the team back in Woking and highlights the irresistible, all-round appeal of this incredible vehicle.”

This isn’t the only recent success for the 720S – it was also named Car of the Year at the Vehicle Dynamics International Awards 2018.

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “There is simply no stopping the 720S. It has impressed all the critics and that has translated into sales success too. We suspect this won’t be the last we hearing the 720S picking up awards.”
