Hyundai launches Iron Man version of the Kona

Written by: Neil

The Hyundai Kona has already captured the imagination of many car lovers, and there's a lot to be said for the sleek ruggedness of the vehicle. But the manufacturer has just pushed the boat out that bit further.

Joining forces with Marvel Comics, the maker has brought out the Kona Iron Man edition, which is in essence the same vehicle but has a few exciting new twists; or at least it does if you are one of those people who just can't kick the Marvel comic habit in adulthood. Go on, admit it; there's enough of you out there.

The new car was launched at the San Diego Comic-Con 2018, where various members of the comic-loving fraternity were on hand to see it.

Of course, it won't be able to fly around like Iron Man, but maybe that's the plan for the follow up. What it does have is a range of design alterations that make both the exterior and interior bear a distinct resemblance to the Iron Man suit.

The colour scheme – a combination of maroon and grey – is the most obviously comparable aspect, albeit without a lot of gold trim in sight. But there is also the small matter of the various curves and slightly pointed edges.

Hyundai Motor America chief marketing officer Dean Evans claimed: "The first time we saw the Kona, we knew its unique, rugged design drew a compelling resemblance to the strong and iconic Iron Man suit.” That may be an extravagant claim, but full marks for effort: there are also Iron Man symbols and engravings all over the vehicle, just in case there was any doubt.

Production of this limited edition model will start in December and no doubt some Iron Man fans will be keen on getting hold of one when they start appearing in showrooms early next year.

Apart from that, of course, it is everything you already get with the Kona – the heads up display, the eight inch touch screen, the 1.0 T-GDi petrol engine and the six-speed manual transmission.

Indeed, if Iron Man had one of these, maybe he wouldn't want to bother flying around so much at all.

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: "Beneath the little design tweaks, this is still the same Kona. But if you're into Iron Man and the Marvel universe, it's hard to deny it's an exciting concept."
