We all know that the SEAT Leon Cupra is quite a beast, but it recently went head-to-head with an actual animal as the hot hatch raced a competition show-jumping horse.
Why? Erm, we’re not too sure; just because they can, we guess.
Anyway, race driver Jordi Gené and professional rider Virginia Graells met at Barcelona’s Royal Polo Club for a unique twin challenge: a speed race and an obstacle course challenge.
How does the spec compare? Well, Calgary is a nine-year-old 500kg German stead, capable of reaching 44mph. The other produces up to 236bhp, hitting 60mph in 6.2 seconds with a top speed of 155mph.
It doesn’t seem very fair to us and, indeed, the outcome confirmed that.
In a 100-metre dash, Calgary took 15 seconds to cross the line, while the Leon Cupra did it in just under four seconds, reaching a speed of 62mph.
In the obstacle course, Calgary had to jump over all of the rails without knocking down any, while the Leon Cupra drove around them.
Thanks to Virginia’s skill and her horse’s training, they cleared the two-metre high obstacles in 57 seconds. Meanwhile, Jordi Gené took a slalom approach, driving around the hurdles at 49mph to finish the course in 31.43 seconds.
Despite the SEAT clearly winning both rounds, the two racers somehow declared it a draw.
“This car gives me a special vibe and warmth,” says Jordi. “It gives me an adrenaline rush and enables me to take control.”
He added that, during the obstacle course, there wasn’t much room to manoeuvre the turns, but thanks to the car’s chassis, he was able to change directions very quickly.
Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “Horse vs car: that age-old rivalry. We’re not surprised that the SEAT won out, but we wouldn’t fancy its chances in a fist (hoof) fight.”
