Honda’s Shedden confident of BTCC success at Knockhill

Written by: Neil

The Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship (or BTCC to its mates) heads north of the border this weekend to Scotland’s tight and twisty Knockhill circuit.

Honda’s Gordon Shedden is currently sitting pretty at the peak of the driver standings with 221 points, ahead of BMW’s Colin Turkington and Rob Collard on 219 and 217 points respectively.

The 38-year-old Scotsman has every right to be confident after winning last time out at Snetterton as the reigning champion fought back from a challenging qualifying session to claim victory in the final thrilling encounter.

Naturally, Shedden is looking forward to impressing in front of a home crowd.

He commented: “It’s great that we go into the weekend at the top of the championship, which didn’t look likely after qualifying at Snetterton.

“Winning race three there was a crucial result and it just goes to show that, in the BTCC, it’s not over until it’s over.”

Gordon hoped his Honda Civic Type R would be better suited to Knockhill after troubles in Snetterton, but expected a tight race nonetheless.

“It’s a shorter circuit and a real rollercoaster,” he added. “The crowd are really close to the action and the atmosphere is always electric. We will hang it all on the line, which should make for some great racing.”

Honda teammate Matt Neal, who will start the race in sixth with 157 points, is chasing a record-equalling fourth BTCC crown and recent fond memories of Knockhill after surging from eighth on the grid to win at the Fife circuit back in 2016.

Neal seemed undeterred by the points deficit, saying: “I’m extremely hungry and it is far from over. Knockhill is completely different from anything else on the calendar and it’s quite a crazy challenge for all of us.”

Podium places for both Shedden and Neal would greatly benefit Team Honda, which goes to Knockhill second in the manufacturer standings with 452 points, behind BMW with 506.

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “Gordon Shedden has arguably done more to up the profile of BTCC than any other driver and we wish him every success at Knockhill.”
