Hamilton racks up record fifth British GP win

Written by: Neil

Lewis Hamilton may be one of the most divisive F1 drivers ever. But whatever you think of the Mercedes racer, you have to take your hat (or should that be ‘helmet’?) off to the guy after he notched up a record-matching five career wins in the British Grand Prix.

His dominant victory at Silverstone this weekend saw him equal Scot Jim Clark and Frenchman Alain Prost’s tally of four consecutive home wins.

To put that into some kind of context, Nigel Mansell scored four British GP wins, while James Hunt and Damon Hill only managed one.

Hamilton’s 57th career win saw him slash his deficit to Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel to a single point, with the German falling foul to a front tyre failure with two laps to go. Consequently, the incident saw Seb slip from third to finish seventh.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Hamilton clearly felt the wind was now in his sails, telling fans: “The support has been incredible this weekend. I am so proud I could do this for you all. Now the plan is to win the championship."

Despite taking the lead after the first corner and going 1.6 seconds clear after the first lap, Hamilton insisted F1 was “never easy” and praised his “faultless team”.

Lewis had plenty of kind words for his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas who started in ninth and finished second after an “incredible drive”.

Bottas reacted saying: "I'm really happy today, It was not an easy race to start from P9. The team did a perfect strategy and I just kept my head down. It's a perfect weekend and well done to Lewis."

The Hungarian Grand Prix on July 28-30th provides the perfect opportunity for Hamilton to steal the championship lead from Vettel, ahead of F1’s four-week summer break.

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “Considering the fact that Hungary is where Hamilton holds the record for most wins in the history of the sport (five), he’ll be bouncing with confidence.”
