Hamilton can clinch fourth F1 championship with a win this weekend

Written by: Neil

Lewis Hamilton could be one race away from a fourth Formula 1 world title after a dominant victory in the United States Grand Prix.

Hamilton’s 62nd career victory took him 66 points clear of Ferrari rival Sebastian Vettel (331 to 265 points) with only 75 points available in what remains of the 2017 season.

This means Hamilton is all but certain to secure the title in Mexico City this weekend on October 29th.

If Vettel has any hope of making up the 17-point difference and keep Hamilton from securing the title in Brazil, the German has to win the race and count on his rival finishing sixth or lower.

However, in light of Hamilton’s fine form recently – with five wins and a second from six races – it seems likely we’ll see a fourth consecutive championship double for Mercedes, after clinching the constructors’ title on Sunday in Austin.

Speaking after the race, Hamilton congratulated his team, commenting: “There has been an incredible push for this kind of performance this year. We really pulled together more than I have experienced and seen over the last five years to create something quite special.

“The race was great, it was probably one of the most fun races that I have had for a while and there were quite a few fun ones this year.”

Hamilton started the US GP in pole position but lost the lead to Vettel at the start. However, after tracking the Ferrari for five laps, he reclaimed the front spot at turn 12 on lap six and didn’t look back.

“I didn’t get away to a great start,” he reflected, “but I was kind of chilled about it, knowing from the past that I can overtake here. I had a lot of fun trying to get closer and overtaking.

“The track [was] so special to drive [and] the car felt amazing going through the Esses. We have three more races left this season and that’s three I want to win.”

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “It seems that even if Hamilton does clinch the title in Mexico City, he won’t be coasting through the remaining races, and whatever your opinion of the guy, Lewis Hamilton is a legendary driver.”
