We definitely weren't expected this, but Aston Martin – one of the most acclaimed and prolific luxury sports car manufacturers on the planet – has shocked us all by announcing the creation of its first-ever all-electric model.
There's a palpable sense of excitement in the Petrol News office right now, as we take in the fact that one of our favourite marques will be entering the realm of the electric hypercar!
Unveiling the new RapidE this week, the brand has confirmed it will be completing a limited production run of this highly desirable model in 2019, with just 155 cars set to be made.
Its futuristic looks have really captured the imagination of the team, and with the promise of top-end performance to boot, we really can't wait to see what the mad scientists of Aston Martin have come up with.
Based on the soon-to-be-launched Rapide AMR, the RapidE will replace the former's six-litre V12 engine with an all-electric powertrain, delivering instantaneous drive, massive torque and (we hope) stunning performance.
The RapidE also represents a continuation of Aston Martin's successful partnership with Oxfordshire-based Williams Advanced Engineering – and long may that continue, if this is the result!
Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, adds: "The RapidE was originally an Aston concept way back in 2015. It's therefore great to see the manufacturer sticking to its commitments and delivering an all-electric car that we just know is going to be amazing."
