Ford Mustang smashes through ten million unit landmark

Written by: Neil

Production of the iconic Ford Mustang has hit eight figures as the ten millionth model rolled out of the blue oval’s Flat Rock assembly plant in Michigan.

The UK has played a part in the car’s success with more than 7,000 Mustangs finding homes here since it relaunched in 2016, while Europe collectively accounts for over 38,000 examples.

As you’d expect, the ten millionth Mustang was something special – a ‘Wimbledon white’ 453bhp 2019 GT V8 six-speed convertible, saluting VIN 001 – the first serialised 1964.5 Ford Mustang that featured a 161bhp, three-speed V8.

Jim Farley, president of global markets at Ford Motor Company, believes the Mustang is the “heart and soul of the brand”.

“I get the same thrill seeing a Mustang roll down a street in Detroit, London or Beijing that I felt when I bought my first car – a 1966 Mustang coupe – that I drove across the country as a teenager,” he commented.

“The Mustang is a smile-maker in any language.”

Other models to exceed 10 million sales include the Ford F-Series (more than 34 million), Toyota Corolla (40m), Volkswagen Golf (30m), Vauxhall Corsa (18m) and Renault Clio (12.3m).

It even outsells the Porsche 911

Now in its sixth-generation, the Mustang offers more technology, exhilarating performance and more personalisation than ever.

Beneath the athletic exterior is an upscale cabin featuring soft-touch materials and a 12-inch digital instrument cluster. Under the bonnet, you’ll find a five-litre V8 engine that sends 443bhp through a ten-speed automatic transmission to do 0-62mph in 4.3 seconds.

It has been America’s best-selling sports car for the last 50 years and even outsold the Porsche 911 in the UK and 12 other European markets in 2017.

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “Sports cars are relatively niche so rarely rack up mega sales figures – but the Mustang is a special car.”
