Ford Mustang is king of the sports coupes for third year running

Written by: Neil

We’re big fans of the Ford Mustang here in the Petrol News office and to be honest, who isn’t? Not many people it seems because the fast Ford has just been named the world’s best-selling sports coupe for the third year running.

A whopping 125,809 Mustangs were sold around the world last year – that includes both coupe and convertible bodystyles and takes in 146 different countries.

Naturally, the US is the Mustang’s biggest market with Yanks snapping up almost two-thirds of its total sales in 2017.

But in Europe, the Germans gave the Mustang more love than anyone else, snapping up 5,742 units, with the Brits way behind in second place with 2,211, followed by the French (942).

“The world is falling in love with the Mustang,” said Ford sales analyst Erich Merkle. “The Mustang represents the best of American design, performance and freedom, with an unmistakable personality that’s appeals – regardless of your postcode.”

Later this year, Ford will refresh the Mustang by giving it a more athletic exterior and an upscale interior with soft-touch materials and 12-inch digital instrument cluster.

One engine option available in the updated Mustang will be a 443bhp 5.0-litre V8, mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, that can race from zero to 62mph in 4.3 seconds. Yes please!

Additionally, a special edition Ford Mustang Bullitt celebrating the famous film’s 50th anniversary begins production in June.

Available in shadow black or classic dark highland green, the Mustang Bullitt is powered by an uprated five-litre V8 engine that will deliver 457bhp and 529 Nm of torque.

This special Mustang comes with new rev-matching technology that delivers smooth, seamless gear-changes, accompanied by a sporty V8 “blip” during six-speed manual transmission downshifts.

If that didn’t make the Mustang raucous enough, a standard B&O Play premium audio system will deliver 1,000 watts of power through 12-high performance speakers. Crikey, mon cheval!

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “Everybody already knows that the Mustang is the king of sports coupes so these sales figures simply make it official.”
