The highly-anticipated launch of the new Ford GT will feature an industry first that will help the luxury supercar deliver improved performance, efficiency and fuel economy.
Working in partnership with materials science specialist Corning, the pair have developed an innovative new product to replace the traditional windshield and rear engine cover glass used in the marque's current manufacturing process.
The new Corning Gorilla Glass for automotive, thermoplastic and toughened glass applications will be incorporated into the all-new 2016 Ford GT and improve acceleration and braking for the vehicle through its lightweight qualities, as well as helping to bolster fuel economy, while maintaining safety standards.
Created using a three-layer polymer hybrid material – inspired by the latest consumer electronics – the material is thinner than traditional laminate glass, while at the same time being more durable, scratch-resistant and up to 30 per cent lighter.
Removing the weight of the glass also helps to lower the vehicle's centre of gravity, improving handling for future drivers.
Wendell Weeks, chief executive officer at Corning, stated: "We worked with Ford to develop a glass that successfully withstood thousands of hours of durability testing and is now being used in a Ford production vehicle. We are excited to introduce this game changing technology to the market."
