Double GT victory for McLaren at Donington

Written by: Neil

In what was a thrilling climax to this year's British GT season at Donington last weekend, McLaren proved next year could be one to remember with a double victory to sign off in 2016.

Here in the Petrol News office we love it when one of our favourite marques performs at their best out on the track, and this was precisely what McLaren did last weekend in the GT3 and GT4 classes.

Securing victory in both classifications, it was just the second win of the year for Sandy Mitchell and Ciaran Haggerty in the #59 570S GT4, while it was the first for Rob Bell and teammate Alisdair McCaig in the #79 650S GT3.

Both teams rose to the occasion of the packed Donington circuit, with some exciting racing in the run-up to McLaren securing a dual chequered flag.

It all means the championship in both the GT3 and GT4 classes has now been decided and while McLaren failed to secure the title this year – that honour went to TF Sport and RCIB Insurance Racing, respectively – it does bode well for 2017!

So that's it for another year in the GT season, but we'll be waiting with bated breath for its return next year. And who knows, we could be celebrating far more McLaren victories in the process, especially if the impressive end-of-season form from this year is anything to go by.
