BMW will add a new number to its range before the end of the year with the reveal of the all-new 8 Series.
We say ‘all-new’, but it is essentially a coupe version of the 7 Series to take on the Mercedes S-Class Coupe and Aston Martin DB11.
The 8 Series will be unveiled in September, most likely at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and while the arrival of a new BMW is always exciting, news of a performance-focused M variant is what has really stirred excitement amongst the ranks here at Petrol News.
Not to be pronounced ‘mate’ or confused with Scotland’s busiest motorway, the M8 has been teased with shots of a fully camouflaged prototype.
There is no news on what is under the bonnet but the images confirm it will bear some classic M features, namely the larger air intakes and sport exhaust with no fewer than four tailpipes. It will also boast modified brakes to cope with the increased power output.
Rather than develop the M8 using the standard 8 Series as a base, the two cars have been developed in tandem.
Frank van Meel, president of BMW’s M division, said: “The future BMW M8 will build on the genes of the 8 Series and augment its DNA with added track ability and generous extra portions of dynamic sharpness, precision and agility.
“It all flows into a driving experience that bears the familiar BMW M hallmarks and satisfies our customers’ most exacting requirements.”
Also in the pipeline is a race-spec M8 GTE – the car that will spearhead BMW Motorsport’s return to Le Mans.
BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt promised that “the BMW M8 GTE will look spectacular” when it makes its race debut in the Daytona 24 Hours in late January 2018.
Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, adds: “Everything we’ve heard about the M8 so far promises big things and we can’t wait to see how it builds on the standard 8 Series when it goes on sale next year.”
