BMW reveals new X2 compact SUV

Written by: Neil

There’s a new compact SUV on the block. That’s nothing new in an era where a mini mudplugger emerges every other week, but the new X2 from BMW is one we’ve been tentatively looking to in the Petrol News office.

After its recent appearance at Milan Fashion Week, we knew a global reveal was imminent and the final production model looks like it will be a worthy rival to the Range Rover Evoque and Volvo XC60.

For those with a need for speed, the go-to X2 will most likely be the larger of the two diesels: the xDrive25d, which – with 228bhp and 450Nm of torque – can hit 62mph in 6.7 seconds.

The smaller diesel – the xDrive20d – will be the fleet choice, at least from launch, with CO2 emissions as low as 121g/km. More engines will be added to the range not long after the car goes on sale with the front-wheel drive xDrive18d snipping CO2 emissions to 119g/km.

From a design point of view, the production X2 has fulfilled all the promise of the concept, with slick and sharp exterior lines, low-slung proportions of a coupe and the robust construction of an X model.

One notable point for the BMW connoisseur are the large air intakes, which put a twist on the brand’s traditional kidney-shaped grills. These wider intakes are intended to underline the car’s more sporting presence.

Inside, the X2’s cabin blends signature BMW elements, such as a pronounced driver focus and dynamic lines, with the understated ruggedness of any other X model. Even in base level SE models, it feels like a premium SUV with soft surfaces and a raised driver position.

Entry-level models come on 17-inch wheels with black wraparound cladding, sat-nav, dual-zone climate control and a power tailgate.

Sport models feature 19-inch wheels, sports seats and LED lights, while range-topping M Sport X models gain a more off-road-biased look thanks to ‘frozen grey’ design details.

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “We’ve waited a long time to see the finished X2 and it looks as if it will be as premium and brilliant as any new BMW.”
