BMW’s eagerly anticipated 8 Series Coupe is currently undergoing the final stages of testing in Wales, ahead of going on sale this June.
Because the luxury sports car isn’t properly signed off yet, technical details such as 0-62mph, top speed and mpg haven’t been nailed down. But there’s still a lot to sink your teeth into ahead of all the official figures on the 6 Series replacement being made public.
During tests in North Wales (where the car has been partly developed), BMW’s assessment team has been focusing on the range-topping V8-powered M850i xDrive Coupe, which features state-of-the-art intelligent four-wheel drive technology, an active rear axle differential lock, adaptive suspension, active roll stabilisation and integral active steering.
Together, all these come together to form “a perfectly harmonised package for fascinating sportiness and supreme comfort”, BMW says.
That V8 we mentioned earlier has been completely redeveloped to pump out 523bhp – an uplift of 68bhp on the previous unit – while maximum torque has been increased by 100 Nm to 750 Nm, available at 1,800 rpm. All of this is sent through an eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission with shortened shift times.
Auto Express recently got their hands on a prototype and they seemed mighty impressed, describing the M850i as “a fast and capable car” [with] “some dynamic magic” that boils down to a “very talented GT [rather] than a drive-for-the-hell-of-it sports coupe”.
Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, comments: “Everything we know about BMW’s new flagship coupe is incredibly encouraging. We can’t wait to see how the final product weighs up.”
