Biggest ever XJ220 parade planned for July’s Silverstone Classic

Written by: Neil

The iconic yet often overlooked Jaguar XJ220 arrived as the fastest production car in the world when it launched way back in 1992.

With a top speed of 212.3mph, it was the world record holder until the 240mph McLaren F1 stole the title in 1998.

At £470,000, it was a quarter of the price of the world’s fastest car right now – the Bugatti Veyron – and yet only 271 XJ220s were built during its two-year production cycle.

As such, the chances of spotting one in your local supermarket car park are minimal to none and little more than a handful of XJ220s have ever been in the same place at the same time over the years. However, that is all about to change.

Plans are afoot for the the largest ever gathering of XJ220s at the Silverstone Classic, scheduled for Friday 28 to Sunday 30th July. More than 50 examples are expected to appear at the event, which would coincide with the XJ220’s 25th anniversary.

“The largest public gathering of XJ220s in the UK to-date is 20 – our aim for this summer’s Classic is to at least double that,” said renowned XJ220 specialist Don Law.

The Jaguar XJ220 showcase will take place on the Saturday of the event (29th), with a parade lap involving some specially invited guests who have close associations with the car’s design, development and on-track success.

Silverstone Classic has an impressive track record when it comes to gathering notable cars. In 2011, it pulled together 767 E-Types, which still stands as the largest parade of Jaguars. Organisers have also achieved record numbers of Aston Martins, Porsche 911s and Ferrari F40s over the years.

Originally conceived to feature a V12 engine and four-wheel-drive, the XJ220 had to be watered down to meet emissions legislation and performance targets. As a result, the showroom XJ220 model featured a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 sending 542bhp to the rear transaxle via a five-speed manual gearbox.

Tickets are available for the event at SilverstoneClassic.com now.

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, adds: “The XJ220 is a car that would have been on the bedroom walls of many a child in the early ‘90s, and many of these kids will be at Silverstone Classic this July. I can only imagine how much it will blow their minds!”
