Bentley Bentayga sets Pikes Peak hillclimb record

Written by: Neil

Only a few days have passed since we told you about how Skoda’s Kodiaq vRS set a record lap time at the Nürburgring, and now we’re telling you about another record-breaking SUV.

This time, it’s the Bentley Bentayga, which has just set a new record for being the fastest production SUV to complete the Pikes Peak hillclimb.

Driven by two-time champion Rhys Millen, the Bentayga completed the 12.42-mile course in just 10:49.9 – that’s almost two minutes quicker than the previous record.

Averaging 66.5mph as it climbed almost 5,000ft through 156 corners, the luxury off-roader undoubtedly benefited from the W12 engine’s 600bhp power output and 900Nm of torque.

However, other features such as adaptive air suspension, active electric 48V anti-roll control and carbon ceramic brakes also played a major part in the triumph.

This wasn’t achieved by some special barebones variant either; the car that set the record is virtually identical to what you’d find in any Bentley showroom.

The front seats were replaced with racing versions while the rear seats were left on the garage floor. Additionally, a roll cage, fire suppression system and special tyre were installed.

Chris Craft, Bentley’s member of the board for sales and marketing, said the record “proves the outstanding dynamic ability of the Bentayga”.

Speaking after his historic hillclimb, Mr Millen described the Bentayga as “an incredible machine”.

“To take a luxury SUV with minimal modifications and be able to drive up this course in under 11 minutes is a huge testament to the performance and level of engineering in the Bentayga,” he said.

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, added: “Another week and another record-setting SUV – we could get used to this.”
