Aston Martin to produce 25 gadget-laden DB5s – for £2.75m each

Written by: Neil

Aston Martin’s DB5 is known for being the car of choice for James Bond, appearing in more 007 movies than any other model, but the real-world DB5 may disappoint a few people for its lack of machine guns and ejector seat.

However, that is all about to change after Aston Martin announced a limited run of DB5s that come with actual functioning gadgets, such as rotating number plates.

Only 25 examples of the silver-painted ‘Goldfinger DB5 continuation edition’ will be made available and each car will cost £2.75 million, which means 99.99 per cent of us can only dream about owning one.

Aston says the cars will be authentic reproductions of the DB5 seen in the movies, with “some sympathetic modifications to ensure the highest levels of build quality and reliability”.

EON Productions has been called in to work on gadgets for the Goldfinger edition cars, with the tech wizardry being co-developed by special effects supervisor Chris Corbould, who won an Oscar and a BAFTA for his work on 2011’s Inception.

Under the bonnet is a 282bhp 3,995cc straight-six engine that can get the car up to 60mph in 7.1 seconds with a top speed of 148mph.

Andy Palmer, president and chief executive officer at Aston Martin, said: “To own an Aston Martin has long been an aspiration for James Bond fans, but to own a Silver Birch DB5, complete with gadgets and built to the highest standards in the very same factory as the original James Bond cars? Well, that is surely the ultimate collectors’ fantasy.

“The skilled craftspeople at Aston Martin Works and the expert special effects team from the James Bond films are about to make this fantasy real for 25 very lucky customers.”

Stephen Hasley, brand manager at Petrol News, added: “James Bond has driven some remarkable automobiles since he burst onto the silver screen with Dr. No in 1962, from the self-swimming Lotus Esprit from 1977’s The Spy Who Loved Me to the missile-shooting BMW Z8 from The World Is Not Enough.

“However, arguably the most iconic car to be driven by 007 is Aston Martin’s DB5 and this is a rare chance to secure one.”
